- Description
- The more I worked with Graham, as both a student and a research assistant, the more I came to appreciate the depth of his radicalism. Given his radicalism there was reason to laugh when he told the story of how he was sponsored by the US Information Service to do a lecturing tour of the Philippines on Australian Constitutionalism, a topic which he became expert upon largely in response to the sacking of the Whitlam Government in 1975. He belongs to that list of Australian radical intellectuals which would include names like Bernard O'Dowd, Brian Fitzpatrick, Russel Ward and Stuart Macintyre, and it is his rare ability to combine democratic sentiment with high calibre research which makes his constitutional work so important.
